In 2006, John Lewis, the director of the LA Zoo, stated that Gita’s foot was healed two months before her handlers found her on the ground, unable to stand. A combination of arthritis and infections are the leading cause of death of elephants in zoos, and Gita was no exception. These are the results of a small enclosure with no room for physical or mental stimulation.  Billy is living under the same conditions.

His time is running out.
